The Jigsaw Puzzler’s Favourite Octogenarian – Jan van Haasteren
Jan van Haasteren has been creating amazing jigsaw puzzles for Jumbo for many decades. They are all highly detailed, very colourful and above all humorous. There are always masses of hidden amusing images waiting for us to discover.
He celebrated his 80th birthday last year, so many happy returns to the jigsaw puzzler’s favourite octogenarian.
To celebrate this wonderful landmark, Jan created a special 80th birthday jigsaw puzzle. Jan’s fans will immediately search for his trademark – the shark’s fin – featured in every puzzle. This is usually extremely well hidden and hard to find so a brilliant challenge. Make sure you also look for other favourite images – Saint Nicholas, The Hands, The Dentures and Jan’s self-portrait which you will find in nearly all of his illustrations. He uses all types of social events as inspiration for his images. These jigsaws are very enjoyable to complete as you never know what you are going to see next!
What is Next for Jan?
Jan says he has always got loads of ideas for new designs, sketching crazy things that pop up in his mind every day. Firstly, he works out the idea in a detailed pencil drawing and then develops his ideas in ink. It is quite a long process to get all the detail in, hence each picture takes about three months to complete.
He has promised to continue to create his wonderful masterpieces for Jumbo so we can look forward to many more Jan van Haasteren jigsaw puzzles to come.
Jan lives together with his wife Romi in Bergen in Holland. He doesn’t do jigsaw puzzles himself but he sometimes helps his wife if she is struggling to find a piece.

The Destiny jigsaw puzzles ask you to use your imagination to piece together what the characters and the scene in the image printed on the box will look like in the future. This box image for Wasgij Destiny 17 shows the good old days when petrol was cheap and there were fewer cars on the road. What would that scene look with modern day cars and increased petrol prices?
Imagine jigsaw puzzles are my favourite concept from Wasgij. You have to really use your imagination as the idea is that piece together what the people in the picture would daydream about. What a great idea! This one depicts a lively household at bedtime. Ahhh… we’ve all been there.
Who doesn’t love a Mystery? The Mystery Wasgij jigsaw puzzles are “what happened next?” puzzles. Wasgij Mystery 13 shows Special Agent Wasgij in a spot of bother… this can’t be his final job… can it? Piece together what happens next.

This wonderful event is believed to be the world’s biggest collection of jigsaw puzzles. The first jigsaws date all the way back to 1766 and were used to teach geography to upper class children. Read more about the exhibition here.
